Kwibuka29 🇷🇼

Writer: Leslie Lewis (she/her) Leslie Lewis (she/her)

Today we commemorate the lives lost 29 years ago in the Central African country Rwanda. It is a solemn day. 'Kwibuka' means 'to remember' in Ikinyarwanda, the language of Rwanda.

In my previous career, I was an actor, playwright and producer. Here is a video of when my play, Miracle in Rwanda, was performed by the Rwandan actress Malaika Uwamahoro, at the United Nations in New York City.

Trigger warning: disturbing images.

To add to the message that I say in the video--As long as there is still breath in our body, it is never to late to make amends and repair the past.

Do you know about Rwanda? It has changed so much in the last 29 years, and has become 'the jewel of Africa.' They honor their past and have moved powerfully forward into the future.

Again, it's never too late, and we can thrive even after horrific loss.

Might you be interested in visiting Rwanda? Let me know in the comments. And as always, thank you for reading this.
