Investing, done properly, is a long-term game, and the earlier we start, the better it can go for us. But it can be overwhelming to think about, which is why this blog exists! Getting our kids starting to think about investing is a great idea, because, as they say, kids are sponges, and once they get the idea, they can start educating themselves and talking with their friends about it.
When I was a kid, my dad showed me how to read a stock table (a practice that doesn’t really exist any more!).
With my kids: a few years ago, my mother gifted them some money and with their dad, they invested in companies that made things they liked: Apple, Tesla, Nike. It has worked out pretty well for them! They did a natural “Buy and Hold” strategy—just pick stocks and then hold them for a long time.
The MGB Investing Starter Kit is harder to explain in a fun way to kids, but a good way to start is picking one company, like Tesla, and start to watch what happens to the stock price over time.
Another way is: how we research anything these days—a Google search for a YouTube video geared toward kids learning about investing, and I’m sure you’ll find something that would probably be helpful for us adults, too!
